Camela is a 13 year old girl. She is from Barangay Lawis, Alaska Mambaling. She is in grade 8 (second year high school) at the Alaska Night Highschool. She was an honor student in gradeschool and among her awards include “Most Behaved”, “Most Trustworthy”, “Homemaker” and “Courageous”. Her favourite subject in school is Filipino and Math. She plays volleyball and badminton. She likes to make designs and drawings.

 

Camela is the eldest of four children. Her father was a construction worker, but died five years ago due to a pulmonary disease. Her mother is now the main breadwinner in the family and works as a stay-in domestic helper for a second cousin. The three elder siblings live with their paternal grandmother in Alaska Mambaling, but the youngest sister was adopted by a maternal aunt in Samar. An extended paternal family live nearby in separate households, whom they can rely on for support during difficult times. Camela’s family is a recipient of the DSWD’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino (Conditional Cash Transfer) program. Camela wants to be successful when she grows up, but needs some help right now to be able to reach her dream.

Honey Bee is a 15 year old girl, in grade 9 (third year high school) at Alaska Night High School. Her favourite subjects are English and Science. She likes to read English books, and often consults the dictionary to find out the meaning of unfamiliar words. She likes to play scrabble and badminton in her free time.

 

She is the fifth of nine children, six of whom are living. Most of her elder siblings did not finish school because they had to find work to support the family. Her father finished marine engineering but currently works as security guard at a local bank. Her mother finished elementary school and works as a fruit vendor. Her most difficult experience was having no money at all to buy food, that all they could eat was salt with rice. She was hurt when her younger brother died at 14 years old due to an overwhelming infection, and the medical expenses drained the family’s limited resources.

 

She wants to finish schooling so she can pursue her dream of becoming successful someday to be able to support herself, her family and to send her younger siblings to school.

Hartford is a 3rd year student in a vocational technical electromechanical course at CITE, in the top three of his class, graduating by June 2015. He is 18 years old, a resident of B. Aranas Extension, Cebu City. He has been a consistent honor student in highschool at the Cebu City Don Carlos A. Gothong Memorial National High School.

 

His favourite subject is math, although he professes to need more improvement in this subject. He likes to play basketball and chess in his free time. He is undergoing on-the-job training as a document controller at a Japanese engineering company that designs ships.

 

His father is a highschool graduate, working as a pedicab driver. His mother is a highschool graduate, a full-time housewife. He is the youngest of five children. His older sisters work to augment the family income, although they have to attend to paying debts for their own education.

 

Hartford wants to be a civil engineer, to put up buildings and to be able to support his family and be self-supporting. He hopes that with just a little more help, he will be able to finish his course and help others too.
